Because what happens to people has very little to do with how good they are. The sun shines and the rain pours and on the good and the wicked alike. Droughts and floods do not choose who they will affect. The only sensible answer to your question is "Why not?"
So make the best of what life dishes out to you, whether feast or famine. Do what you can to improve the lives of those around you and take good care of your environment so there is something good to leave for your children and for the future generations of the world.
